CWISE J014611.20–050850.0AB: The Widest Known Brown Dwarf Binary in the Field

نویسندگان

چکیده

While stars are often found in binary systems, brown dwarf binaries much rarer. Brown dwarf--brown pairs typically difficult to resolve because they have very small separations. Using dwarfs discovered with data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) via Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project, we inspected other, higher resolution, sky surveys for overlooked cold companions. During this process system CWISE J0146$-$0508AB, which find has a chance alignment probability based on similar proper motions of components system. follow-up near-infrared spectroscopy Keck/NIRES, determined component spectral types L4 and L8 (blue), making J0146$-$0508AB one only few benchmark systems blue L dwarf. At an estimated distance $\sim$40 pc, projected separation $\sim$129 AU, it widest pair date. We that such wide may imply formation low-density star-forming region.

The widest ultracool binary

Aims. I test the ejection scenario of formation of brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars through the detection of a very wide ultracool binary. Methods. LEHPM 494 (M6.0 ± 1.0 V) and DENIS-P J0021.0–4244 (M9.5 ± 0.5 V) are separated by 1.3 arcmin and are high proper motion co-moving ultracool stars. I have used six astrometric epochs spaced 22 years to confirm their common tangential velocity. Re...

Discovery of the Widest Very Low Mass Field Binary

We present the discovery of the widest (∼ 6700 AU) very low mass field binary to date, found in a proper motion cross-match of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Two Micron All Sky Survey. Our follow-up J-band imaging provides a 10-year baseline for measuring proper motions. Consequently, we are able to confirm the common proper motion of the pair to within 10 mas, implying a 99.5% probabilit...

The Orbit of the Brown Dwarf Binary Gl 569 B

We present photometric, astrometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby (9.8 pc) low-mass binary Gl 569Bab (in turn being a companion to the early-M star Gl 569A), made with the Keck adaptive optics facility. Having observed Gl 569Bab since August 1999, we are able to see orbital motion and to determine the orbital parameters of the pair. We find the orbital period to be 892 ± 25 days,...

A Foreground Field Brown Dwarf ?

We examine recent claims that the T-type brown dwarf S Ori 053810.1-203626 (S Ori 70) is a spectroscopically verified low mass (3 −1 MJup) member of the 1–8 Myr σ Orionis cluster. Comparative arguments by Mart́in & Zapatero Osorio asserting that S Ori 70 exhibits low surface gravity spectral features indicative of youth and low mass are invalidated by the fact that their comparison object was no...

PHL 5038 : A spatially resolved white dwarf + brown dwarf binary

A near-infrared excess is detected at the white dwarf PHL 5038 in UKIDSS photometry, consistent with the presence of a cool, substellar companion. We have obtained Hand K-grism spectra and images of PHL 5038 using NIRI on Gemini North. The target is spatially and spectrally resolved into two components; an 8000 K DA white dwarf, and a likely L8 brown dwarf companion, separated by 0.94 ′′. The s...
